Services Employed: Architectural Design, Graphic Design, Planning
CLIENT GOAL: Design a collective of buildings that fit seamlessly with the existing fabric of downtown Folsom, while at the same time taking into account the historic railroad nature of the site.
DESIGN RESPONSE: Historic Folsom Station is a collection of 4 buildings designed around a historic train turntable in the middle of the site. The turntable and historic photos provided design cues for the project - the buildings are all designed in a late 1800s design motif that evokes the sites historic nature.
The mixed-use project includes approximately 100,000 square feet of retail, office, restaurant space and housing. Building D, The Granite House, is the tallest building at 3-stories high. With a brick and stone façade its designed to resemble a historic hotel that might have sat on the site. Building R, the restaurant building, is designed to resemble a historic roundhouse. It is 2-stories tall and has a brick façade. Building G sits on Sutter Street and continues the street façade of the downtown buildings. It is 2-stories high and has a brick and stone façade. It is designed to resemble 4 different buildings stepping down the street. Building E sits on the north side of the site and its brick and stone façade was designed to resemble a more traditional industrial building that might be found next to a rail yard.
