Ladd Tower – Portland, Oregon

Services Employed: Architectural Design, Graphic Design, Interior Design

CLIENT: OPUS Northwest

CLIENT GOAL: Build a new residential tower that is respectful of its unique site adjacent to Portland’s Cultural District, historic South Park Blocks and SW Broadway, the city's primary urban artery.

DESIGN RESPONSE: Break the tower’s exterior into several parts which relate to their unique position on the site, and to the character and scale of neighborhood structures. A stone base, with proportions inspired by the surrounding historic buildings, will comprise the lower 3 floors of the building. This base, with its warm materials and deep set windows, will serve as a pedestrian-friendly contributor to activate the sidewalk realm. The upper levels of the building are skinned in a structurally glazed glass curtain wall system. The glass provides daylight to the residences while also creating a beautiful addition to the skyline - simultaneously transparent and reflective, changing with light conditions throughout the day. The Ladd Tower is a 23-story, 330,000 sf building with 332 apartment units.

The Ladd Tower is LEED Gold Certified by the USGBC.
