CLIENT GOAL: Create a cost-effective condominium building with a memorable design vocabulary that is as sustainable as possible within the budget.
DESIGN RESPONSE: Located in Portland's Pearl District, the Elizabeth is a 360,000 square foot urban residential mixed-use development. The buildings details and materials recall the art nouveau period, particularly custom iron work at ground level. A large public plaza with a glass retail pavilion faces the adjacent street car line, creating an ideal gathering space for the loft residents and the surrounding neighborhood.
SUSTAINABLE DESIGN:
Sustainable design elements include: 100% stormwater collection and filtration from roof and plaza; 20% more energy efficient than code; 90% of construction waste recycled; low embodied energy; low VOC materials; more than 50% of interior materials with recycled content; native plant zeroscaping; high efficiency glazing.
