Office workers in the 21st century are putting in longer hours and producing more than at any time in history. Connected 24/7 and with a wealth of information available at their fingertips, they are plugged into a technological world that was unimaginable 20 years ago. They require and deserve an office space that supports this new reality: the more we ask from them, the better their work environment needs to be.
Good visibility, large floor plates and secured parking are still basic aspects of office projects. But open, flexible environments with lots of natural light and fresh air are just as important. Amenities such as health clubs and coffee bars, wi-fi, and places for informal meetings and collaboration are all becoming key elements in creating supportive places where workers can do their best. In the big picture, sustainable design is playing an ever greater role, with a host of strategies that include energy efficient systems and building envelope; creative use of healthy, recycled materials; and water collection with on-site filtration.
